Hello.

Just a quick update on things fundraising wise.

Went camping for a weekend in Exmoor and did an 18km walk. It rained. It was cold. The bus broke down. Hideous.

Non-uniform day and cake sale at school on the last day of term.

Staff car wash and sort of cake sale on the inset day at school.

All in all, as a group of 15, I reckon we made about £1500 so between all of us, that's £100 each. Not too bad!

Donations are up t0 £40 with the thanks going to Anya Paul, Helle Brink and Carolyn Atkinson.

I hope you're all well.

Rosie.

The meeting

Okay, I've just got back from the meeting. Lots to tell you.

-I leave on the 10th July, return the 7th August 2010.
-Two weeks of the time will be spent doing a community project in Caimito National reserve. This will be school construction and agriculture.
-Then various excusions around Ecuador
-Then 8 days in the Galapogos

That's a very basic itinerary. Here are the costs...

-Flights £981
-Galapagos flights £260
-Galapagos taxes £75
-Galapagos full board tourist program £700
-Community project £400
-Excursions £225
-Insurance £50
-Staff cover costs (that's supply staff for the time the teachers on the trip are missing at school) £138
-Tips £50
-Contingency £100
-Heathrow coach transfers £30
-Training weekends for the trip £90
-Yellow Fever vaccination £50
-Anti-malarial tablets £80
-Other vaccinations, not likely to be more than £100
-Various bits of kit that are likely to total about £100-£200

TOTAL:£3,529.
Less than we thought! (still a lot though).

Now as I said, not all of the four weeks is spent doing the community project.
I am not asking for money for me to go to the Galapagos. That is an extra part of the trip in which we won't be working on a community project. Also, the excusions aren't involved with the community project either.

If you take that into account, I still need £2,269 in order to do the community project.
(I still need the £981 for flights, I still need the money for vaccines, I still need to get the kit, I still need the insurance etc etc.)

Of course, I am going to be working damn hard to get this money. On saturday I'm heading in to town to hand out yet more CVs to anywhere that will take them, I've stopped having instrument lessons, Christmas/Birthday presents, it'll all go in this Ecuador fund.

I still need your help though. £3,529 is such a lot of money for my family and if I could have your support, it would make so much of a difference. I need you to help me get to Ecuador!!

I'm going to ask now, please, if you want to help financially, click the donate button at the bottom of this post. It really will make all the difference. This money will go into my parents' Paypal account which will then go to a separate bank account for my Ecuador trip. Paypal is trusted and is totally safe. I can assure you, all money donated will go straight in this fund. I'll look into getting some screenshots of said bank account or something as proof.

Also, if you want to get in contact with me, please send me an email with ecuador-rosie@hotmail.co.uk . I've set it up especially.

If you do choose to donate and would prefer not to remain anonymous, send me an email saying you've donated and I will try my hardest to get back to you. This means a lot to me so please do get in contact.

That's all I think I've got to say right now. Going to put a donate button at the bottom of this post.

Ooh, tell your friends! Twitter, Facebook, Bebo, Myspace (does anyone still use Myspace?), whatever! I can't do this on my own!!

Thank you again. Each and every one of you is fantastic!!

I'll be in touch soon!

Rosie.

If you're on Twitter, I'm @rosiemacleod by the way. cheers!

How this all happened...

Okay, let's start at the beginning (a very good place to start)...

Every year, my school runs an amazing trip for sixth form to a less-travelled country. These are once-in-a-lifetime trips and you have to go through a rigourous selectrion process in order to be chosen.

15 students were selected after interviews and a weekend camping to go on this trip.

I was lucky enough to be one of them!

The destination was then Madagascar. It then changed to Ecuador after the schools board in our area deemed Madagascar an unsafe destination (I know, I know...)

The cost of the trip was to be £2,500. When the destination changed, although the aim was to keep the price the same, it unavoidably rose to £3,000. Including vaccinations and kit, it was more likely to be about £4,000.

In Ecuador, we'd be working with the charity Yanapuma to help finish building a school and also agricultural projects.

Now I'm not living in poverty. My Mum's a nurse and my Dad woks in IT. But with having just put my sister through university, the credit crunch hitting us a bit and me not having a job, it would be near impossible for us to afford the trip.

I felt so guilty about taking this money from my parents, money they don't have, that I was going to give up my place on the trip. I drafted an email to the teacher organising it all, saying that I wanted to pull out. I told my parents how I felt and obviously, they were desperate for me to go and not throw the oppurtunity away. But I felt so guilty; I didn't know what to do! So...I did what a teenage girl would do: I social networked!

CUE TWITTER!

Not only did I have a reply from the lovely PHILIP SCHOFIELD, but he said he's sponsor me £100! While this is amazing in itself, a whole load of people got in touch off the back of it saying they'd help too! They were giving me all these ideas on how to raise money and lots were saying they'd sponsor me themselves! I could not believe it!

The general consensus was to set up a JustGiving page. Super. However, the charity we're going with isn't listed on JustGiving. Boo. And also, that money wouldn't go towards my trip; it would go straight to the charity. Whilst this is obviously good, it means that it won't go through me and won't offset my final amount.

So I've set up this blog!

On here to follow will be a break down of what I'm doing and what it costs, various pictures showing that I am actually going on this trip (not lying to you), a donate button so you can help me if you want through Paypal, and probably a load of other stuff too!

I actually have a meeting about the trip tonight. When I get back, I will tell you exactly what's going on and I'll set wheels in motion.

Before I go, I just want to say thank you. Thank you to Philip for helping start this off and to everyone who's already given me support on Twitter and thank you to you for reading this page; you've all totally restored my faith in human kind! I honestly can't believe how huge the Twitter response has been. I'm not going to lie, I cried a bit. (Don't tell anyone that. They'll laugh at me.)

Anywho, I've got to go out for this meeting!

I will update ASAP.

Thanks again!

Rosie.

P.S. The picture is of the letter detailing that I'm on the trip. I've blacked out everything that says what school I go to etc. because I'm paranoid about internet safety.
